How to Mute a Tab in Any Browser on Chromebook

Dominic ReignsBy Dominic ReignsJune 2, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

Unexpected audio from a browser tab breaks your focus fast. An autoplay clip, a looping ad, or a forgotten music stream can blast out at the worst moment. Most browsers let you silence a single tab in one or two clicks. Here is how to mute a tab in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Edge, plus what works on phones.

How to Mute a Tab in Google Chrome

Hover over the noisy tab, right-click, and pick Mute Site. The site stays quiet until you repeat the step and choose Unmute Site.

You can also block audio for chosen sites for good. Click the three-dot icon at the top right, open Settings, then Privacy and Security. Open Site Settings, expand Additional Content Settings, and click Sound. Typing chrome://settings/content/sound in the address bar jumps straight there.

The Sound panel has a master toggle that cuts audio across every site, and you can add specific web addresses to the block or allow list. If you want finer control, a few Chrome Web Store add-ons mute tabs on their own.

New to add-ons? This walkthrough on managing Chrome extensions covers installing and removing them without breaking your setup.

How to Mute a Tab in Mozilla Firefox

Look for the small speaker icon on the active tab and click it. A line crosses the icon to confirm the sound is off. Right-clicking the tab and choosing Mute Tab does the same job, and repeating it brings audio back.

Firefox also controls autoplay media. Open the menu at the top right, then Settings on Windows or Preferences on Mac. Go to Privacy and Security, scroll to Permissions, and click Settings next to Autoplay. Set Default for All Websites to Block Audio and press Save Changes.

To allow sound on one page such as YouTube, click the padlock by the URL, open the arrow next to Connection Secure, and pick More Information. Under the Permissions tab, find Autoplay, uncheck Use Default, and select Allow Audio and Video.

How to Mute a Tab in Safari on Mac

Click the speaker symbol that shows up to the right of the site name on any tab. The speaker icon in the address bar works the same way.

Right-click a tab and choose Mute Tab for another route. To keep one tab audible and quiet the rest, right-click the speaker in the address bar and pick Mute Other Tabs. One press on the address-bar speaker cuts every tab at once, and a second press restores them.

How to Mute a Tab in Opera

Opera works much like the rest. Click the speaker symbol on a tab to cut its sound, or right-click and select Mute Tab. Repeat the action to undo it.

Right-clicking a tab also gives a Mute Other Tabs choice, so you can keep audio on one page while silencing the others.

How to Mute a Tab in Microsoft Edge

The current Edge runs on Chromium, so it behaves like Chrome. Click the speaker symbol on the tab to toggle sound, or right-click and pick Mute Tab.

To limit autoplay media, open the three-dot menu, go to Settings, then Site Permissions, and choose Media Autoplay. Set the control to Limit. Edge then restricts playback based on how you have used each site before.

Still running the old EdgeHTML version on an outdated Windows 10 build? Click the speaker by the site name, where an X marks the muted state, or right-click and choose Mute Tab. Moving to the newer build also helps when sound stops working across your device.

How to Mute a Browser Tab on Mobile

On iPhone and iPad, Chrome, Safari, and Firefox pause media when you switch away from a tab, so there is no per-tab control to set.

Android Chrome plays audio across tabs by default and lets you block it. Open the three-dot menu, go to Settings, then Site Settings, then Sound. Toggle sound off to mute every site, or leave it on to allow all. Press Add Site Exception, type a URL, and tap Add for individual rules.

To silence one site during your session, tap the lock icon by the address, open Site Settings, press Sound, and set it to Block. Chrome on Android skips desktop add-ons, though extensions on Android are possible through other browsers, and a few productivity extensions handle audio on the desktop side.

    FAQs

Why can’t I mute a single tab in Chrome?

Chrome offers Mute Site instead of a per-tab option, which silences every page from that domain. Right-click the tab and choose Mute Site, or add the address to the Sound block list in settings.

Does muting a tab stop video ads from playing?

No. Muting cuts the sound only. The ad or video keeps running in the background. To remove ads outright, use an ad blocker rather than the mute option.

How do I unmute a tab?

Repeat the step you used to mute it. Right-click and pick Unmute Tab or Unmute Site, or click the speaker icon on the tab again to bring the sound back.

Can I mute a tab on my iPhone browser?

There is no per-tab mute on iPhone. Chrome, Safari, and Firefox pause audio and video automatically when you leave a tab, so media stops on its own.

How do I mute every tab except one?

In Safari and Opera, right-click the active tab and choose Mute Other Tabs. Safari also lets you right-click the address-bar speaker to silence the rest at once.
