How to Add Audio to Google Slides

Dominic ReignsBy Dominic ReignsAugust 3, 2026No Comments6 Mins Read

Sound turns a flat deck into something closer to a video. Google Slides pulls audio straight from Drive, so a music bed, a sound effect, or a recorded voice track can sit on any slide you choose.

The whole process takes about a minute. Below is how to add audio to Google Slides, the playback settings worth changing, and what to do when a clip refuses to play.

Audio File Formats Google Slides Supports

Google Slides accepts two audio formats. Anything else gets rejected at the insert stage.

    FormatSupportedNotes
MP3YesSmaller files, fine for music and narration
WAVYesUncompressed, larger, cleaner for short effects
M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGGNoConvert before uploading

Got an M4A from a phone recorder? Run it through a free browser converter and export as MP3. Voice memos and podcast clips almost always need this step.

How to Add Audio to Google Slides Step by Step

Your clip has to live in Google Drive under the same account you present with. A file someone shared with you works too, as long as you have view access.

Step 1: Upload the audio file to Drive

Open Drive, click New in the top left, pick File upload, then select your MP3 or WAV. Wait for the upload to finish before switching tabs.

If the file sits on a Chromebook and you cannot remember which folder it landed in, this guide on finding files stored on ChromeOS shows where downloads end up.

Step 2: Insert audio into the slide

Open your deck and click the slide that needs sound. Go to Insert, then Audio. Music meant to run behind the entire talk belongs on slide one.

Pick your file from the Drive list and click Insert.

Step 3: Position the speaker icon

A small speaker graphic lands on the canvas. Drag it anywhere. Pull a corner handle to resize it, same as you would with an image.

Reusing this deck for another audience? Learn how to duplicate a slide or a full presentation before you start editing.

Playback Settings After You Add Audio to Google Slides

Click the speaker icon, then open Format options from the toolbar, the right-click menu, or the Format menu. Expand Audio playback in the side panel.

    SettingWhat it doesUse it for
On clickTrack stays silent until you click the iconSound effects, clips you introduce out loud
AutomaticallyStarts the moment the slide appearsBackground music, intro slides
Volume when presentingSlider, typed value, or arrow stepsStart at 100 and lower it on your machine
Hide icon when presentingRemoves the speaker during the showMusic running underneath, only shows with Automatically
Loop audioRestarts the track when it endsSelf-running decks with a short track
Stop on slide changeCuts the sound as you advanceSeparate clips per slide, untick for continuous music

Test Volume and Playback Speed Before You Present

Click the speaker icon and press Play. The mini speaker inside the player mutes the track or adjusts its level.

Chrome also gives you tempo control. Click the icon, tap the three dots at the right edge of the player, and choose Playback speed. Handy when a narration track runs slightly long for your slot.

Test on the machine you will actually present from. A deck that sounds fine on a laptop can vanish through room speakers, and the same applies during screen sharing in Google Meet.

Restyle or Replace the Speaker Icon

Leaving the icon visible? The side panel has Recolor, Adjustments, Drop shadow, and Reflection controls.

You can also swap the graphic for a logo or a shape that matches your colours. Select it, click Replace image in the toolbar, then choose your source. This works well on portrait decks built for phone screens, where the default icon eats space.

Audio Not Playing in Google Slides

Three things account for most failures.

    1. The browser tab is muted. Right-click the tab and check.
    2. Volume sits at zero in Format options. Raise the slider.
    3. Sharing permissions block the file. Set the Drive file to Anyone with the link, Viewer, before sending the deck to someone else.

A clip that will not insert at all is a format problem. Convert it to MP3 and try again.

    Recording Your Own Narration

Slides has no built-in recorder. PowerPoint does, Google does not, so you record elsewhere and import the finished file.

Our walkthrough on adding a voice over to a presentation covers scripting and microphone choice. For the capture itself, these Chromebook voice recording tools save straight to MP3.

Want the slides and narration as one video instead of separate files? The guide to recording a Google Slides session explains that route.

Building Decks Faster With Plus AI

Writing, design, and delivery all compete for the same hour. Plus AI for Google Slides handles the first two. Describe what you need in a few words and it drafts a deck you can edit.

Ask it to rework existing copy for a sales audience and it rewrites the text in place. The Plus AI site has templates, sample decks, and a free trial.

    FAQs

Can I add audio to Google Slides on mobile?

No. Insert, Audio only appears in the desktop browser version. Add the file on a computer, then present from the mobile app afterwards and playback still works.

Why does my audio stop when I change slides?

Stop on slide change is ticked. Open Format options, expand Audio playback, and untick it. The track then continues across every slide until it ends.

Can I add a YouTube song to Google Slides?

Not as audio. Insert the video instead, shrink it, place it off the visible canvas, and set it to autoplay muted or unmuted in Format options.

Does audio play when I share the deck as a link?

Yes, if the audio file in Drive is shared with the same people. Set it to Anyone with the link, Viewer, or recipients hear silence.

How large can my audio file be?

Drive limits apply rather than Slides limits. Keep tracks under roughly 100 MB so playback starts quickly on slower connections.

Formatting a script or handout alongside the deck? Our note on using subscript formatting in Docs covers a common sticking point.
