Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook looks to have a May 6 release date

Folks waiting for a smaller Chrome OS tablet surely have the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet on their wishlist after seeing the 10.1-inch tablet with a detachable keyboard get introduced in January. According to Best Buy, your wishlist might be fulfilled on May 6, as the online retailer is currently showing that as a release date for the IdeaPad Duet Chromebook in the U.S.

Chrome Unboxed spotted the product listing for the slightly upgraded model with 128 GB of storage capacity and placed a pre-order at $299. The base model with 64 GB of storage is expected to retail for $279. Best Buy currently doesn’t have a listing for the base model and it appears that the pre-order process is now turned off.

Still, this Chrome OS tablet with MediaTek chipset was expected to debut in May, so odds are good that May 6 is the release date.

If you missed the specifications from these two devices, here’s a reminder:

I don’t need another Chromebook or Chrome OS tablet at the moment, but I may drop the $299.99 for the IdeaPad Duet if only to see how that MediaTek Helios P60 processor performs. I was generally disappointed by the ARM processor in the Acer Chromebook Tab 10, which turned me off from the smaller Chrome OS tablet form factor.

With 4 GB of memory and a smaller screen than I’m used to, the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook wouldn’t be much of a productivity device for what I do. But it could be an ideal part-time browser and entertainment unit in a portable package.

Is anyone else interested in this li’l guy?

  1. People seem to be going crazy about this, can’t help but feel they going to be disappointed with performance. The same way people are disappointed about Samsung Galaxy Chromebooks battery life.

  2. Definitely interested. My wife’s iPad is getting long in the tooth and I’d like to get her over to Chrome OS and Android since she already has an Android phone. It’s a pain working between platforms.

    1. I had an iPhone 5S and I kept trying to make it as much of an Android phone as possible lol.

  3. Here’s what I don’t understand: How can a sub-$300 Chromebook have a 2 MP (1080p) Webcam while “higher-end” Chromebooks like the Asus C436FA, the Acer Spin 13, and the Samsung Galaxy all have 720p Webcams? It seems to be obvious that these mfrs are cutting costs with the Webcam hardware because they realize that we’re not taking notice of the the Webcam specs until we’re shocked when we jump on a video-conference for the first time.

  4. I’m one of those that jumped right into things for this one. Thankfully I got the pre-order in as it currently doesn’t the ability to pre-order.

The $299 price for pre-order was for the Ice Blue + Iron Gray 128GB (Model #ZA6F0016US in case you were intersted).

I ordered this more from an interest point of view and not a “I need a new tablet.”

  5. Oh my gosh I am so excited! My Acer Chromebook 11 has been used everyday for school and general web consumption and it has been great! But now, it’s been 2 years and the battery is starting to show its age a bit. I’ve always wanted a detachable just like the Ideapad Duet, but there never really were any Chromebooks in this form factor, and alternatives like the Surface and iPad are just to expensive for me. My birthday’s coming up and I’m thinking I might be able to sell my old Acer to help fund the new Duet before the Acer’s battery dies completely.

  6. I want one – I just love things like this that enable me to do emails on the go as well as a little productivity. Plus for me as a mobile trainer (well, I used to be before lockdown) the ability to carry something so light is very tempting. Not worried about performance, I don’t do games that demand high performance. It should replace my Pixel C which was a waste of time and money in retrospect.

    1. I just ordered this morning – for delivery by the 20th. Mine is also to replace the Pixel C that is really showing its age.

  7. If you an android fan, this is the answer for you. Best specs for any andorid powered tablet but a bit low for the browser portion of chrome os. This will be an app beast and media consumption power house. Plus you can browse a few tabs with ease an edit word docs.

  8. got my mainline in on the 4th… listen, nerds: not everyone notices how “fast” something is when it comes down to mili-second quarks… not everyone has “20-40” windows open at once… what do we expect? a machine that works and that doesn’t cost an arm-and-a-leg to draw an apple on it… students work with SO MUCH LESS than what a bloated WIndows gives you and i never really needed a way to record and publish through Airplay, or play video games (we have Sony for that)… lots of us (about 90%) need a machine that we can USE to read and answer emails, watch movies, do BUSINESS, stream music, and the NORMAL things PEOPLE DO… we AREN’T professional architects, or engineers, nor do we live in NYC or LA and actually NEED production software… HEY– if you want to spend the money on your failed dreams, go ahead… the rest of us will cheer for great machines like this one… mic dropped, your failure accepted…

  9. There is an active Chromebook group on Facebook ,where early impressions are being posted.

    Speed Info:
    Powerbook Slate m3: Octane Score – 27144, Speedometer 2 – 80.2
    Lenovo Duet: Octane Score – 9766, Speedometer 2 – 28.04.

Super speedy? No. Useable and convenient? We’ll see.

Mine is slated for delivery on Wednesday, May 13th.
