How to Turn On Chrome Full Screen on Any Device

Dominic ReignsBy Dominic ReignsApril 21, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

Chrome full screen mode hides the address bar, tab strip, and system taskbar so only the webpage remains. It takes one keypress on most platforms — here’s how it works on every device.

What Chrome Full Screen Hides on Each Platform

Once full screen is active, Chrome removes several interface layers depending on the OS.

    Element Hidden Windows macOS ChromeOS
Tab bar & address field Yes Yes Yes
    Bookmarks strip Yes Yes Yes
System taskbar / Dock Yes Yes Yes
Window title bar Yes Yes Yes

How to Turn On Chrome Full Screen on Windows

Windows offers two routes — the menu and the keyboard. Most people stick with the keyboard after trying it once.

    Using the Three-Dot Menu

Open Chrome and click the vertical three-dot icon at the top right. In the dropdown, find the diagonal-arrow icon next to the zoom controls. Click it and Chrome fills the monitor immediately.

To exit, move your cursor to the very top of the screen. A bar slides down offering an option to leave full screen. Pressing F11 does the same.

    Using the F11 Key

Press F11 while Chrome is open. The browser takes over the entire display instantly. Press it again to return to the normal windowed view. This shortcut also works on Linux.

How to Launch Chrome Full Screen Automatically on Windows

You can configure a desktop shortcut so Chrome always opens in full screen without any manual step each time.

    1. Search for Google Chrome in the Start menu
    2. Right-click the result and select “Open File Location”
    3. Right-click the Chrome icon in the folder and choose “Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)”
    4. Right-click the new desktop shortcut and open “Properties”
    5. Go to the “Shortcut” tab and find the “Target” field
    6. After the closing quotation mark, add a space and then --start-fullscreen
    7. Click Apply, then OK, then restart your PC

From that point, double-clicking that shortcut opens Chrome in full screen every time. You can still press F11 during any session to switch back to windowed view.

    Chrome Full Screen on macOS

Open Chrome, then click the three-dot menu at the top right. Tap the expand icon in the dropdown and the browser fills the screen.

The faster option is the keyboard shortcut: Control + Command + F. Press the same combination again to shrink back to a window. The green circle button at the upper-left corner of Chrome does the same thing — it’s the native macOS maximise control.

    Method Action
    Keyboard shortcut Control + Command + F
Menu route Three-dot icon → expand icon
Window button Green circle (upper-left corner)

Chrome Full Screen on Android and iPhone

Chrome on mobile has no single button that hides all OS chrome and browser controls simultaneously. Android and iOS reserve fixed space for their own navigation bars.

Rotating the phone to landscape orientation fills the wider axis and gives more screen area. For video, tapping the expand icon inside the media player itself covers the full display.

Running multiple tabs while streaming video can pressure memory. Keeping too many tabs open alongside active media is one of the quieter drains on mobile session performance.

How to Go Full Screen on a Chromebook

Chromebooks have a physical key for this — a rectangle with small outward-facing arrows at its corners, sitting in the top row of the keyboard. Press it once to enter Chrome full screen mode. Press it again to exit.

If you prefer staying on the keyboard entirely, keyboard-only browsing on ChromeOS pairs well with full screen for a completely trackpad-free setup. You can also pull up a complete list of available ChromeOS shortcuts at any time by pressing Ctrl + Alt + /.

Chromebooks with ChromeOS 123 or later also let you remap keyboard shortcuts — useful if you want a different key combination to toggle full screen.

How to Exit Chrome Full Screen on Any Device

    Platform Exit Method
    Windows / Linux Press F11
macOS Control + Command + F, or click the green window circle
Android Tap the exit icon within the video player
iOS Swipe upward and select the exit option
ChromeOS Press the full-screen key again
