Chrome OS vs. Windows 11 [Performance and Features]

Microsoft Windows and Google Chrome OS are the most used desktop operating systems. Both now work on similar laptops, as cheap Chromebooks are no longer the only option.

You might see two nearly identical laptops, one running Windows 11 and the other using Chrome OS.

That makes comparing both critical since many buyers now choose between them. They need to decide which one suits them better.

Chrome OS has greatly improved but is still different from Windows 11. Some users may find it enough, while others may feel it lacks key features.

Windows 11 vs. Chrome OS: Hardware Support

    Windows 11 vs. Chrome

One significant difference is hardware support. Windows 11 has strict requirements, like TPM 2.0, but it offers more flexibility than Chrome OS.

Windows 11 has been running on most laptops for recent years and on pre-built or custom-made desktops.

Users can install it without official support even if a device does not meet the requirements.

A Chromebook remains a Chromebook. If you dislike Chrome OS and want Windows, you will likely need a new computer.

While replacing Chrome OS with another system is possible, the process is complex and not ideal for most users.

For new laptop buyers, there are strong options for both systems. Chromebook hardware has advanced, and some high-end laptops now use Chrome OS with Intel and AMD chips.

However, there are still limits, such as the lack of gaming Chromebooks. Gamers will always need Windows.

Chrome OS Offers More Than a Web Browser

Many assume Chrome OS is just a laptop with a Chrome browser, but that is untrue. The browser plays a key role, but Chrome OS includes much more.

    Linux and Android Support

Chrome OS supports Android apps and includes a built-in Linux virtual machine. Users can run Linux applications with graphical interfaces or through a terminal.

While it has some limitations, Google keeps improving it. If Chrome OS lacks a necessary app, Linux support helps fill the gap.

    Offline Functionality

Chrome OS does not require an internet connection to function. Many services, including Google Docs, work offline. When online, users can seamlessly access Google’s cloud services.

    Development Tools

Developers can use Chrome OS for coding. It does not offer as many tools as Windows 11 but supports VSCode and other coding applications.

Users can create an efficient workflow. Chrome OS also runs Windows in a virtual machine with Parallels, though with some restrictions.

    Google Assistant Integration

Chrome OS includes Google Assistant, just like on smartphones. Compared to Cortana, which is no longer available in many regions, Google Assistant provides better voice control and access to various skills and commands on a Chromebook.

    Windows 11 Supports Almost Everything

    Windows 11 Supports Almost Everything

Windows 11’s biggest strength is its ability to run nearly all software. As the most widely used desktop operating system, it supports many applications.

    Software Availability

Windows 11 supports most software. The Microsoft Store has many apps, but users can install apps from other sources.

The Windows Package Manager helps install multiple programs simultaneously; direct downloads are also available.

    Browser Choice

Windows 11 provides flexibility in browser selection. Microsoft Edge is the default and shares its core technology with Chrome.

While Chrome OS allows other browsers, the experience is less smooth.

    Gaming Performance

Windows 11 outperforms Chrome OS in gaming. While Chrome OS supports cloud gaming and Android games, it lacks dedicated graphics hardware.

For native PC gaming, Windows remains the best choice.

    Seamless Compatibility

Windows 11 makes software compatibility effortless. If users need an app, they can find it.

The latest updates even allow Linux GUI applications through the Windows Subsystem for Linux.
