What Are The Differences Between Chromebook Gaming And Windows Gaming?

What Are The Differences Between Chromebook Gaming And Windows Gaming?

If you’re looking to buy a new gaming computer or simply wondering what is available, then you’ve likely considered buying either a Chromebook or a Windows laptop.

These two devices are very similar in terms of price and performance; however, they do have differences, especially when it comes to gaming. With various options, including Aces, HP, and Lenovo on the market, Chromebooks are a good option for many.

But will they make the cut when it comes to playing high-demand games, and how do they compare to Windows devices?

    Chromebook Gaming

Chromebooks are significantly different do specifically developed gaming laptops that run Windows, so you need to set your expectations accordingly. These devices run Google’s Chrome OS and offer users the Chrome Web Store to download games and apps.

Windows apps can’t easily be run on a Chromebook, which poses a hurdle to gamers, since most games are designed to run on the Windows operating system.

Chromebook owners are restricted to the games available on the Chrome Web Store or to ChromeOS-compatible games on the Android and Google Play Store.

However, these are very limited, and Android games that work on Chromebooks are typically lower quality so as not to make too many demands on the device hardware.

This does not mean that games are boring or unenjoyable, though. Some genres, like casino games, don’t require large RAM or top-market processors.

Playing online slots in this climate can distract you from the world for a few minutes, and a Chromebook is the perfect device for these types of games with lower-quality graphics and basic gameplay mechanics.

Steam announced that its services are coming to ChromeOS in 2022; however, this beta testing process will be stopped, and Steam will no longer work on Chromebooks by 2026.

There are also rumors that Lenovo and HP may be developing gaming-focused Chromebooks. Whether these will be successful remains to be seen, but it is a step in the right direction for Chromebook users who want to game.

Gaming on a Chromebook can be summarised as follows:

    • Limited native gaming: Native games are restricted to simpler titles available on the Chrome Web Store, or in some cases, the Google Play Store. These games are similar to those found commonly on mobile devices.
    • Hardware limitations: Since gaming is not the main focus of Chromebooks, these devices have lighter hardware and less RAM, making it unsuitable for running intensive games.

    Cloud gaming on Chromebooks

All hope is not lost for Chromebook users who want to game. Cloud gaming is a popular option, since the game runs remotely (on the “cloud”) and is streamed through the Chromebook, where gameplay is controlled.

The benefit of this type of play is that a powerful laptop or PC is not required to run games. All the user needs is a fast internet connection and a capable Chromebook. Almost any game can be played through the cloud.

There are some downsides to cloud gaming, like a slight input lag when a key is pressed. A stable connection is also a must; otherwise, the game will lag or won’t load correctly. Players will also have to pay for the cloud gaming service; however, this will give them access to an entire library of games.

Nvidia GeForce Now is one of the best cloud gaming services available to Chromebook users, followed by Xbox Cloud Gaming, which can work through a browser on the device. There is also Google Stadia, although this service leaves a lot to be desired.

    Other advantages of Chromebooks

Chromebooks may not be the best for gaming, but these devices offer many other advantages to users:

    • They’re incredibly easy to use and intuitive, making them perfect for those looking for an uncomplicated interface.
    • The laptops have exceptional battery life, lasting for many hours on a single charge.
    • They work seamlessly with all of Google’s services, including Gmail and Google Drive.
    • Chromebooks are designed with their users’ security in mind. The operating system is frequently updated to fix potential bugs, and there are other security features that protect against viruses and malware.

    Windows Gaming

Windows gaming is very different from the Chromebook experience. Almost all games are designed for the Windows operating system, and there are many specially designed gaming laptops that run Windows.

These laptops are linked to the Google Play Store and can run all Android apps and games, as well as most titles on platforms like Steam.

Windows gaming offers the following features:

    • Customization: Hardware can be upgraded and customized to make the device better suited to gaming, like adding extra storage or better graphics cards.
    • Offline gaming: Games can be played offline, since the laptop has the processing power to run complicated games.
    • Native and high-end games: Most PC games can be run directly on the machine, including the latest AAA titles.
    • Powerful hardware: Supports powerful processors, dedicated graphics cards, and more RAM, which are necessary for high-fidelity graphics and smooth gameplay.

    In Conclusion

Although Windows laptops are better equipped than Chromebooks for gaming, Chromebooks are more affordable and offer enhanced security features.

Chromebook users can circumvent gaming restrictions by signing up for cloud gaming services, which will give them access to the latest titles without having to fork out a lot of money for a new gaming PC.
