What Does Adobe Firefly AI Do?

Dominic ReignsBy Dominic ReignsJune 16, 2026No Comments6 Mins Read

Adobe Firefly is Adobe’s generative AI tool for making and editing images, video, audio, and designs from plain text prompts. It runs as a standalone web and mobile app, and its features sit inside apps like Photoshop and Illustrator. Adobe trained its first model on licensed Adobe Stock and public domain content, which is why creators treat the output as safer for commercial work.

What does Adobe Firefly AI do

You type what you want, and Firefly generates it. The core job is text to image: describe a scene, pick a style, and the app returns four options in seconds. From there you can swap models, edit, or push the result into another Adobe app.

The newer angle is choice. Inside one login, Firefly now runs Adobe’s own models alongside partner models from Google, OpenAI, Runway, Luma AI, and Black Forest Labs. You pick the model that fits the task instead of jumping between separate sites.

If you work on a Chromebook, the web app handles the heavy lifting on Adobe’s servers, similar to how browser-based photo editing tools on ChromeOS run without local GPU power.

Adobe Firefly AI features for images, video, and audio

Firefly splits its work across four areas. Each one started as image-only and has grown wider over the past two years.

    Image generation and editing

Text to Image builds pictures from a prompt. Image to Image reworks a photo or sketch while keeping its structure. Generative Fill adds, removes, or replaces parts of an image and matches the existing lighting. There are also tools to expand a frame, upscale resolution, and remove people or objects.

    Video and animation

Generate Video turns a prompt or a still image into short clips with adjustable resolution and aspect ratio. You can animate your own images, add motion and transitions, and translate a video into other languages while keeping the timing close to the original.

    Audio

Firefly generates studio-quality music licensed for use anywhere, plus voiceovers, sound effects, and dubbing. The translate feature covers more than 20 languages for audio and video.

    Ideation and design

Boards give teams an infinite canvas for mood boards, storyboards, and brand mock-ups, with the AI models built in for quick remixing. Text prompts work in over 100 languages.

How to use the Adobe Firefly AI image generator

Getting a first image takes under a minute. The steps below match the Text to Image tool in the web app.

Log in to Firefly with an Adobe ID, or open a free account. Pick Text to Image on the homepage.

Write a prompt of five words or more. Adobe’s example: “a product shot of a sushi roll underwater.” Add keywords for lighting, angle, and mood to steer the result.

Click Generate. Firefly returns four options. Hit Load More for more variations, or upload a reference photo to shape the style.

Refine by tweaking the prompt, adjusting settings, or using Generative Fill. When the result works, download or share it.

Every download carries Content Credentials, a tag that marks the file as AI-generated. That label travels with the image so viewers can check how it was made.

    Adobe Firefly pricing and plans

Firefly runs on generative credits. Free covers a limited monthly batch; paid tiers raise the count and unlock premium and partner models.

Standard gives 2,000 monthly credits at $9.99. Pro adds 4,000 credits, full Photoshop on web and mobile, and Adobe Express Premium for $19.99. Premium reaches 50,000 credits and unlimited Firefly Video access at $199.99 for high-volume work.

The free tier is enough to test the tool. It mirrors the logic behind other free browser tools worth setting up early: try it before you commit to a paid plan.

How Adobe Firefly compares to other AI image generators

The pitch that sets Firefly apart is commercial safety. Adobe trained its base model on licensed Stock and expired-copyright content, so output without a beta label can be used in paid projects.

That contrasts with open-source options. Stable Diffusion accounts for a large share of AI images globally through free forks, but it puts the copyright burden on the user. Firefly trades some of that openness for cleaner rights.

For artists who want a drawing-first workflow rather than a prompt box, browser-based drawing apps remain a closer fit. Firefly leans toward generation and editing, not freehand work.

If your output is mostly clips for social, pairing Firefly’s video tools with a dedicated Chromebook video editor covers both ends: generate the footage, then cut it.

Is Adobe Firefly safe and ethical to use

Adobe attaches Content Credentials to every Firefly image, a record showing when and how the file was made. The company co-founded the Content Authenticity Initiative in 2019, now past 3,300 members.

Adobe says it does not train on Creative Cloud subscribers’ personal content, and Adobe Stock editorial content stays out of the training set. Users can also train Custom Models on their own brand assets for consistent, on-brand output.

Questions about data and authorship still come up across AI platforms, much like the unclear data policies flagged on some AI chat tools. Firefly’s edge is documentation: the rights and provenance are written down rather than assumed.

    FAQs

Is Adobe Firefly free to use?

Yes. The free plan covers Firefly on web, desktop, and mobile with limited monthly generative credits for standard and premium features. Paid plans start at $9.99 a month for 2,000 credits and broader access.

Can I use Adobe Firefly images commercially?

Yes. Output from non-beta features can be used commercially because Adobe trained the model on licensed and public domain content. Beta-feature output is usable but not covered by Adobe’s indemnification.

What AI models does Adobe Firefly use?

Firefly runs Adobe’s own image, video, and audio models plus partner models from Google, OpenAI, Runway, Luma AI, and Black Forest Labs. One login gives access to all of them inside the same app.

Does Adobe Firefly work on a Chromebook?

Yes. Firefly runs in the browser and processes generations on Adobe’s servers, so a Chromebook handles it without local graphics power. An Android app is also available through Google Play.

Which Adobe apps include Firefly features?

Firefly-powered features appear in Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Express, InDesign, Lightroom, Substance 3D, and Adobe Stock. The standalone Firefly app combines image, video, audio, and design tools in one place.
