How to Delete Downloads on Chromebook

    Dominic ReignsBy Dominic ReignsJuly 30, 2026Updated:July 30, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

Downloads pile up fast on ChromeOS, and the local drive is small. Clearing them out takes about ten seconds once you know where the Files app hides. This guide covers how to delete downloads on Chromebook, how the Trash folder works, and what to do when files come back or refuse to disappear.

What Happens When You Delete Downloads on a Chromebook

ChromeOS does not wipe a file the moment you hit delete. Since ChromeOS 108, removed items move to a Trash folder inside the Files app.

Google states those files sit in Trash for 30 days, then vanish for good. You can also empty Trash yourself at any point.

Anything you might want later belongs in the cloud first. This walkthrough on backing up a Chromebook to Google Drive covers the upload process step by step.

How to Delete Downloads on Chromebook Using the Files App

The Files app handles every local folder, including Downloads. Here is the standard route.

    1. Click the launcher circle at the bottom-left of the screen, then select the up arrow to open all apps.
    2. Open Files.
    3. In the left panel, expand My files and click Downloads. The search icon at the top right finds a specific item by name.
    4. Right-click the file and choose Move to trash. Older ChromeOS builds label this Delete.
    5. Confirm if a prompt appears.

That is the entire process. If the sidebar layout looks unfamiliar, this breakdown of how file locations work on ChromeOS explains what each section holds.

One catch: files listed under Recent, Images, Audio, or Video cannot be deleted from those views. Open the real folder and remove them there.

How to Delete Downloads on Chromebook With a Keyboard Shortcut

Skip the right-click menu entirely. Select the file inside the Files app and press Alt + Backspace.

The file drops into Trash right away. Hold the keys down and work through a list one item at a time, which beats clicking through menus for every file.

How to Delete Multiple Downloads at Once

Bulk cleanup uses the same selection rules as any desktop file manager.

    • Ctrl + click picks individual files scattered through the folder.
    • Shift + click grabs everything between two points in the list.
    • Ctrl + A selects the whole Downloads folder.

Once selected, press Alt + Backspace or click the trash icon at the top right. Large batches can take a minute to process.

How to Empty Trash and Permanently Delete Files

Moving files to Trash does not free up storage. The space stays occupied until Trash is cleared.

Select Trash in the Files app sidebar, then click Empty trash now. ChromeOS warns you that the files are about to be deleted forever. Choose Delete forever to finish.

Check the result under Settings, then Device, then Storage management. If the number barely moved, browser cache is probably the culprit rather than downloads, and clearing cached data in Chrome handles that side.

How to Clear Download History in Chrome

Download history and the files themselves are two separate things. Press Ctrl + J to open the downloads page in Chrome.

Removing an entry there only hides the record. The actual file stays in your Downloads folder until you delete it through the Files app.

When Deleting Downloads Does Not Fix the Problem

Sometimes storage stays full or files reappear on their own. A few things worth checking.

Android apps and Linux containers keep their own storage areas that the Downloads folder never touches. Those show up separately in storage management.

Files you never saved yourself point to something else. Our guide on removing malware from ChromeOS lists what to look for, and you can also run a virus scan on a Chromebook through a Play Store security app.

Still crawling after a cleanup? Full storage is only one reason a Chromebook slows down. When nothing else works, a Powerwash reset wipes every local file in one pass, so back up first.

    FAQs

Where do deleted downloads go on a Chromebook?

They move to the Trash folder in the Files app. ChromeOS keeps them there for 30 days, then deletes them automatically. You can empty Trash manually at any time.

Can you recover deleted downloads on a Chromebook?

Yes, if the file is still in Trash. Open Trash in the Files app, right-click the item, and select Restore. After Trash is emptied, recovery is not possible.

What is the shortcut to delete downloads on a Chromebook?

Alt + Backspace. Select the file in the Files app and press both keys together. It moves straight to Trash without any confirmation prompt.

Does clearing download history delete the files?

No. Clearing history at chrome://downloads removes only the browser record. The file stays in your Downloads folder until you delete it through the Files app.

How do I delete all downloads at once on a Chromebook?

Open the Downloads folder in Files, press Ctrl + A to select everything, then press Alt + Backspace. Empty Trash afterward to reclaim the storage space.
