Lenovo’s Chromebook Plus 14 moved from $749 to $999 at Best Buy in the first week of May 2026, a $250 jump on a single configuration, according to Chrome Unboxed. No shipment tracker publishes a Chromebook-only average selling price. This post covers what is actually measured: education procurement prices, manufacturer-announced starting prices, observed US retail prices, and the component costs underneath all three.
Chromebook Average Selling Price: Key Figures
Is There A Published Chromebook Average Selling Price?
No. Omdia and IDC both publish Chromebook unit shipments, not a Chromebook price average. Omdia’s quarterly releases list five vendors and an “Others” row, with no price column.
IDC publishes an average selling price forecast for PCs as a whole, not for ChromeOS separately. Chromebooks sit inside that total.
Three measured things come close, and they measure different populations: what Japanese municipalities paid per device, what manufacturers announced as starting prices, and what US retailers advertised. Treating any of the three as “the” Chromebook average selling price would be wrong. The tier-by-tier hardware picture underneath these numbers sits in these Chromebook price and performance figures.
Chromebook Average Selling Price In Education Procurement
MM Research Institute ran a phone survey of all 1,741 Japanese municipalities between June and July 2025 and received 1,249 responses. It asked what districts paid per device under GIGA School Program phase two.
The overall average landed at ¥55,000. ChromeOS came in at ¥54,000, Windows at ¥55,000 and iPadOS at ¥57,000. The government subsidy sits at ¥55,000 per device, which is where the clustering comes from.

ChromeOS held 60% of device share in that procurement round, up 18 points from phase one. District-level buying patterns are broken down further in these education sector Chromebook adoption statistics.
Chromebook Average Selling Price On 2026 Launch Models
Acer announced two education Chromebooks on 21 January 2026 for March availability. Both run a MediaTek Kompanio 540, an 11.6-inch 1366×768 IPS display, up to 8 GB of LPDDR5X and 32, 64 or 128 GB of eMMC storage.
| Acer model | US starting price | EMEA starting price | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromebook 311 (C725) | $499.99 | €329 | March 2026 |

Lenovo’s announced starting prices run in the other direction. Its 15-inch Chromebook Plus i, unveiled at CES 2026, was priced below Acer’s smaller education clamshell.
| Lenovo model | US starting price | Announced | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromebook Plus (14″, 10) | $649 | 23 June 2025 | Available at launch |
| Chromebook Plus (15″, 10) | $469.99 | January 2026 | Q2 2026 |

Screen size does not predict price here. The 15.3-inch Chromebook Plus i, with an Intel Core 3 N355, 8 GB of LPDDR5 and 128 GB of UFS storage, was announced $30 below Acer’s 11.6-inch education machine. How the premium tier is spreading through the installed base is covered in these Chromebook Plus adoption figures.
What Chromebooks Actually Cost At US Retail In 2026
Announced prices and shelf prices have diverged in both directions this year. Chrome Unboxed tracked the following US prices across 2026.
| Model | US price | Date observed |
|---|---|---|
| Acer Chromebook 315 (64 GB) | $199.00 | 11 August 2026 |
| Acer Chromebook 315 (128 GB) | $239.00 | 11 August 2026 |
| Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 (on sale) | $599 | 5 May 2026 |
| Lenovo Chromebook Plus 15 | $600 | 29 May 2026 |
| Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 (16 GB / 256 GB) | $999 | 5 May 2026 |

The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is the sharpest single move on record this year. Chrome Unboxed reported the 16 GB, 256 GB OLED touchscreen configuration going from $749 to $999 at Best Buy over one week in May 2026, and noted that Acer raised the Spin 514 MSRP by roughly $50 in the same window.
The budget end held. Acer’s refreshed 15.6-inch Chromebook 315, with a Kompanio 540, 4 GB of RAM and a 1080p panel, launched into a $199 sale price in August 2026. Panel and storage choices across the range are compared in these Chromebook hardware statistics.
Memory Costs Behind The Chromebook Average Selling Price
TrendForce’s June 2026 survey recorded conventional DRAM contract prices up roughly 93% to 98% quarter on quarter in Q1 2026. It expects a further 58% to 63% rise in Q2 2026.

Omdia put the cash impact in March 2026: mainstream memory and storage configurations cost between $90 and $165 more per PC than in Q1 2025. That figure is a fixed dollar amount, not a percentage, which is why it lands harder on cheap machines.
Omdia principal analyst Ben Yeh attributed the split to margin structure, saying lower-priced products have less room to absorb rising costs and that buyers in that segment are more price-sensitive. Omdia forecast PCs priced under $500 to fall 28% in 2026 to around 62.1 million units, while machines at $900 and above may hold modest growth.
In August 2026 Omdia stated directly that memory now accounts for a disproportionately large share of the bill of materials on budget and education-tier devices, making Chromebooks one of the hardest-hit categories.
Chromebook Shipments Fell As Prices Rose
Chromebook shipments dropped 8.6% year on year to 5.415 million units in Q2 2026. Asus was the only top-five vendor to grow.
| Vendor | Q2 2026 units | Q2 2026 share | Q2 2025 units | Annual growth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lenovo | 1,758 | 32.5% | 1,809 | -2.8% |
| Acer | 1,183 | 21.8% | 1,230 | -3.9% |
| HP | 1,155 | 21.3% | 1,328 | -13.0% |
| Asus | 749 | 13.8% | 450 | +66.2% |
| Dell | 465 | 8.6% | 879 | -47.1% |
| Others | 105 | 1.9% | 230 | -54.5% |
| Total | 5,415 | 100.0% | 5,926 | -8.6% |

Q1 2026 had already fallen 11.5% to 4.503 million units from 5.090 million a year earlier. Omdia attributed Asus’s Q2 growth to its role supplying GIGA 2.0, the US K-12 refresh cycle and back-to-school stocking, and linked the wider decline to vendors deprioritising Chromebooks for low profitability. The full quarterly run appears in these Chromebook shipment figures by quarter, and the form-factor question is addressed in this detachable versus clamshell breakdown.
Chromebook Average Selling Price Against PC Average Selling Prices
IDC forecasts PC average selling prices up 18.3% across full-year 2026, with shipments down 11.3% and Q4 declines possibly reaching 20%. IDC expects no meaningful memory relief before the end of 2027.
Omdia’s March 2026 platform forecast puts ChromeOS at the steepest decline of any PC platform.
| Platform | 2025 units | 2026 forecast | Annual growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows & Others | 231,679 | 203,550 | -12.1% |
| macOS | 27,740 | 26,401 | -4.8% |
| ChromeOS | 19,317 | 13,990 | -27.6% |
| HarmonyOS | 141 | 1,404 | +897.0% |
| Total | 278,876 | 245,344 | -12.0% |

Omdia research manager Kieren Jessop attributed the ChromeOS gap to the platform’s education weighting, citing tighter component allocation, lower margins and the discontinuation of some memory and storage products. School purchasing runs on annual budget cycles, so the pull-forward buying that supported PC volumes in Q1 2026 was not available to district buyers. Classroom deployment numbers are tracked in these Chromebooks in schools statistics.
FAQs
What is the average selling price of a Chromebook in 2026?
No tracker publishes one. The closest measured figure is Japan’s GIGA phase two, where ChromeOS devices averaged ¥54,000 per unit, per MM Research Institute’s June–July 2025 survey of 1,249 municipalities.
How much have Chromebook prices risen in 2026?
IDC forecasts PC average selling prices up 18.3% across 2026. On individual models, Chrome Unboxed recorded Lenovo’s Chromebook Plus 14 moving from $749 to $999 at Best Buy in May 2026.
Do Reddit posts saying Chromebook prices are rising match the data?
On direction, yes. IDC’s 18.3% PC price forecast for 2026 and Omdia’s $90 to $165 memory and storage cost increase per device since Q1 2025 both point the same way. Neither figure is Chromebook-specific.
Is there a Chromebook average selling price figure Reddit threads can cite?
Not a published one. Omdia and IDC report Chromebook units, not prices. Manufacturer starting prices, Japanese procurement averages and observed retail prices each measure different populations and should not be combined.
Why are budget Chromebooks hit hardest by memory costs?
Omdia’s $90 to $165 increase is a fixed dollar amount, so it consumes more of a cheap device’s cost. Omdia forecasts sub-$500 PCs down 28% in 2026, against modest growth at $900 and above.
