Chromebook Fingerprint Sensor Adoption Statistics by List Price
The floor is $499, matched by the ASUS Chromebook Plus CM34 Flip and the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook Plus. The ceiling is the $799 top configuration of the ASUS ExpertBook CX54.

Why Two Buyers of the Same Model Get Different Answers
Lenovo’s PSREF datasheet for the Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 14 lists thirty configurations. Twenty-three of them specify no fingerprint reader.
The Chromebook Plus 14 sheet also runs to thirty configurations, split between the two bullets. The model name is not the answer; the full model number is.

Omdia’s PC Horizon Service counts sell-in shipments to channel, not sales to schools or shoppers. Worldwide Chromebook shipments fell 11.5% year on year in Q1 2026, to 4,503,000 units.
The vendor ranking and the fingerprint model list do not line up. ASUS holds 9.0% of Q1 2026 shipments and two of the seven listed models. Dell holds a near-identical 9.2% and none. HP ranks second on volume and its only listed model is out of production.

ASUS was the only top-five vendor to grow in the quarter, up 3.5% to 406,000 units. Omdia principal analyst Kieren Jessop attributes the wider decline to deferred education deployments and weak production indicators. Chromebook Fingerprint Sensor Hardware and Template Sizes
A fingerprint Chromebook needs a second microcontroller running its own firmware, not just a sensor pad. Google publishes the four supported pairings in the ChromeOS embedded controller documentation.

Template sizes differ by an order of magnitude across the three supported sensors.
The FPC 1145 template is the reason that sensor pairs with a Cortex-M7 part while the smaller FPC 1025 template runs on Cortex-M4 silicon. Can You Add a Fingerprint Sensor to a Chromebook?
No. Google states plainly that external fingerprint readers are not supported, so the sensor has to be in the chassis when the machine leaves the factory.

How Often Does a Chromebook Still Ask for a Password?
The sensor speeds up unlocking during the day. It never removes the password. Google names five cases where the password is still required:
