Chromebook Total Cost of Ownership Statistics 2026

Dominic ReignsBy Dominic ReignsSeptember 11, 2026No Comments7 Mins Read
Chromebook total cost of ownership statistics show strong modeled savings, including 208% enterprise ROI and 229% K-12 ROI, while resale-value studies reach a different conclusion. Compare Chromebook costs, licensing, Windows ESU, and 2026 component pricing.

Two Forrester studies commissioned by Google hold the only Chromebook total cost of ownership statistics with published cost lines rather than headline percentages. A Jamf-funded analysis reaches the opposite conclusion on resale value. This article sets all three against Google’s current licence prices, Microsoft’s Windows 10 ESU schedule, and Omdia’s 2026 component cost data.

$90–$165Added memory and storage cost per PC since Q1 2025, per Omdia

What Do the Forrester Chromebook Total Cost of Ownership Statistics Show?

Forrester interviewed six decision-makers and folded them into one composite: a multinational with $5 billion in revenue and 40,000 employees, of whom 10,000 move to ChromeOS on 3,000 shared devices.

That composite records benefits of $10,088,003 against costs of $3,273,277, a net present value of $6,814,726, and payback under six months. All figures are risk-adjusted and discounted at 10%.

    Increased end-user productivity$6,468,30290,000 hours a year
Lowered device and licence costs$1,298,272$500 per device
    Strengthened security$1,227,79490% incremental risk cut
Reduced IT support needs$1,093,63563% fewer tickets

Productivity carries the largest line and the softest inputs. Forrester models 18 hours saved per employee per year, recaptures half of it, and prices it at a fully burdened $34 an hour.

Device and licence savings, the only line tied to a purchase price, come to $1,298,272. Shared-device deployments of the kind Forrester modelled also show up in enterprise remote-work adoption data.

What the $500 per device figure covers

Interviewees reported $300 off the upfront hardware price and $200 a year in retired endpoint security and management licences. Forrester adjusted this benefit down 10% for risk.

On the cost side, the composite buys 3,000 Chrome devices at an average $500 each plus Chrome Enterprise Upgrades at the $50 per year list price. Hardware and software cost $2,097,239 over three years, change management $762,686, and implementation and ongoing management $413,352.

Chromebook Total Cost of Ownership Statistics for K-12 Districts

The education study, published January 2024, models a district with 30,000 students, 1,200 teachers and 60 IT staff migrating over three years. It runs a five-year horizon, not three.

Benefits reach $35,115,733 against costs of $10,664,986, giving a $24,450,747 NPV and 229% ROI.

    Line itemFive-year PVType
    Avoided legacy hardware and peripherals$28,013,914Benefit
    Easier Chromebook environment management$3,780,496Benefit
    Enhanced security$2,843,517Benefit
    Reduced third-party accessibility tools$477,806Benefit
    Chromebook purchases$9,713,517Cost
    Training and implementation labour$951,469Cost

Source: Forrester Consulting, The Total Economic Impact of Chromebooks in Education, commissioned by Google, January 2024. Five-year risk-adjusted present values.

Avoided hardware carries most of the benefit, and Forrester applied no downward risk adjustment to it. Management labour fell 76%, cutting the modelled staffing requirement from 25 IT employees to six. One North American district in the study logged 50% fewer support tickets after switching.

How much cheaper is a Chromebook in the model?

Forrester priced legacy student devices at $600 and legacy teacher devices at $1,250, against $300 student Chromebooks and $550 teacher Chromebook Plus units.

Lifecycle does the rest of the work. Student devices stretch from a three-year replacement cycle to five, and teacher devices from four years to six. Those refresh-cycle assumptions sit behind the $28.0 million hardware line, and current district buying patterns show how widely they apply.

How Do Licensing Costs Compare With Windows 10 ESU?

Windows 10 support ended 14 October 2025. Organisations keeping those machines patched pay per device, per year, and the two vendors publish prices in different units.

    LicencePublished priceUnit
ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade, standalone$4.17Per device per month MSRP
ChromeOS Kiosk & Signage Upgrade$2.08Per device per month MSRP
Chrome Enterprise Upgrade, TEI list price$50Per device per year
Windows 10 ESU, commercial Year One$61Per device, annual term

Sources: Google, ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade pricing, checked September 2026; Forrester Consulting, September 2025; Microsoft Learn, Extended Security Updates program for Windows 10, updated 17 November 2025.

Microsoft states the ESU price doubles every consecutive year for a maximum of three years. Partial periods cannot be bought, and enrolling in Year Two requires paying for Year One as well.

ESU buys critical and important security updates only. It excludes new features and technical support, so the comparison holds only where an organisation would otherwise keep a working Windows 10 machine. Running costs beyond licensing, including the electricity gap between the two platforms, sit outside both studies.

Chromebook Total Cost of Ownership Statistics Under 2026 Component Pricing

Omdia reported in March 2026 that mainstream memory and storage configurations cost between $90 and $165 more per PC than in Q1 2025. That is a fixed dollar amount, so it consumes more of the $300 student Chromebook Forrester priced than of a premium machine.

Omdia forecasts ChromeOS sell-in shipments falling from 19.317 million units in 2025 to 13.990 million in 2026, a 27.6% decline and the steepest of any platform it tracks.

Research manager Kieren Jessop attributed the gap to the education-heavy platform’s exposure to tighter component allocation, lower margins, and the discontinuation of some memory and storage products.

Omdia also forecasts PCs priced below $500 declining 28% in 2026 to around 62.1 million units, while machines at $900 and above may hold modest growth. Principal analyst Ben Yeh linked the split to margin room rather than demand. Shipment volumes by quarter are tracked in this Chromebook shipment record, and pass-through to shelf prices in these retail price band figures.

Where Chromebook Total Cost of Ownership Statistics Disagree

Diamond Assets and Jamf published a competing analysis on 1 November 2024 putting three-year TCO at $194 for an iPad against $244 for a Chromebook, reversing the usual ranking.

The mechanism is residual value, not purchase price.

A two-year-old Chromebook typically retains around $10 in trade-in value against roughly $145 for an iPad. Two years later the Chromebook is worth nothing, while the iPad still fetches about $80.

The same analysis cites a Township High School District 211 report finding Chromebooks damaged four times as often as iPads, touchscreen repairs costing twice as much, a required surplus fleet of 20% against 5%, and device management running about $6 more per student per year.

Source: Jamf and Diamond Assets, TCO: iPad vs Chromebook for schools, published 1 November 2024.

Both bodies of work are vendor-funded and neither publishes device-level residuals for the rival platform. They also measure different things: Forrester models avoided cost and reallocated labour, while Diamond Assets measures what a used device fetches at trade-in. Hardware wear rates behind that gap appear in these device degradation figures, alongside the wider classroom device mix.

    FAQs

What is the total cost of ownership of a Chromebook?

No universal figure exists. Diamond Assets and Jamf put three-year Chromebook TCO at $244 per device in November 2024. Forrester’s separate models report ROI and net present value for composite organisations rather than a single per-device number.

Are Chromebooks cheaper than Windows laptops over three years?

Forrester’s September 2025 study models $500 in combined savings per device: $300 on hardware and $200 a year in retired endpoint licences. That figure comes from six interviewed organisations in a Google-commissioned study, not an independent market survey.

How much does ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade cost?

Google lists the standalone ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade at $4.17 per device per month MSRP, billed annually. The Kiosk and Signage Upgrade lists at $2.08 per device per month. Forrester’s study used a $50 per device per year list price.

Does Reddit have reliable Chromebook cost of ownership data?

No. Reddit threads carry individual purchase anecdotes, not measured fleet data. The only modelled figures with published cost lines are the two Forrester studies commissioned by Google and the Diamond Assets analysis commissioned by Jamf.

Do Chromebooks hold their resale value?

Diamond Assets reported a two-year-old Chromebook typically retaining around $10 in trade-in value, falling to zero after two more years. The same data put a two-year-old iPad at roughly $145 and a four-year-old iPad near $80.
