Chromebook Detachable VS Clamshell Sales Statistics 2026

Dominic ReignsBy Dominic ReignsAugust 13, 2026No Comments7 Mins Read

Worldwide Chromebook shipments fell 8.6% year over year to 5.42 million units in the second quarter of 2026, according to Omdia. Not one of those units is reported as a detachable or a clamshell. No shipment tracker publishes that split. This page separates the Chromebook data that is measured from the form factor percentages that are modeled.

Why Chromebook Detachable vs Clamshell Sales Statistics Are Not Published In Units

Omdia reports Chromebooks as one category, split by vendor. Its Q2 2026 release lists five vendors and an “Others” row. There are no product type rows.

IDC cuts the market a different way. Its Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker runs on five product categories, and convertible notebooks sit inside the notebook line rather than in a tablet line.

A clamshell Chromebook and a convertible Chromebook land in the notebook category. A detachable Chromebook lands in detachable tablet. IDC does not publish either category split by operating system, and the same gap shows up across the rest of the component and build data for the category.

Chromebook Shipments By Vendor, Q2 2026

Lenovo shipped 1.758 million Chromebooks in Q2 2026, down 2.8%, holding 32.5% of the market. Omdia ties the decline to the completion of the first phase of Japan’s GIGA 2.0 School Program, where Lenovo was the primary supplier.

Acer moved into second at 1.183 million units, down 3.9%. HP shipped 1.155 million, down 13.0% on weaker institutional demand in education.

Asus was the only vendor to grow, rising 66.2% to 749,000 units. Its share moves from 7.6% to 13.8% in the release table, while the narrative in the same release describes the change as 8% to 16%. The two figures in the release do not match.

    Chromebook Shipment Volume By Quarter

Omdia’s two 2026 releases publish four comparable quarters of Chromebook unit shipments. Both 2026 quarters came in below their 2025 counterparts.

Omdia attributes the fall to memory pricing, which now takes a disproportionate share of the bill of materials on budget and education tier devices. Deferred school deployments compound it, a pattern also visible in how districts are timing their device purchases.

Canalys, now part of Omdia, put H1 2025 Chromebook shipments at 11.035 million units, up 10.6%, with Lenovo at 31.3% share. That release carried no form factor rows either. The full run of period-by-period movement sits in these quarterly Chromebook shipment figures.

Chromebook Detachable vs Clamshell Sales Statistics In Device Category Context

The nearest published proxy is IDC’s category data. It covers every operating system, not ChromeOS alone, so it frames the question without answering it for Chromebooks.

Notebook shipments reached 47,432,504 units in Q1 2026. Detachable tablets reached 21,231,440 and slate tablets 14,217,495 in the same quarter.

Detachable tablets ran ahead of their year-earlier level of 19,903,220 units. Slate tablets ran below their 14,709,706. Omdia research manager Himani Mukka has said detachable tablets are replacing traditional PCs in several consumer use cases, though that is commentary on the tablet market rather than a Chromebook measurement. The school-level version of the same contest is covered in these classroom device comparisons.

What The Chromebook Form Factor Percentages Measure

Maximize Market Research values the 2025 Chromebook market at USD 6.30 billion and puts Chromebook laptops at 62.96% of it. Its public summary attaches no percentage to convertibles or tablets.

That 62.96% is a share of revenue under the firm’s own scope definition. Clamshells sell for less than convertibles on average, so a revenue share is not a unit share, and no published figure converts between the two.

The same report puts touchscreen models at 52% of the 2025 market. Convertibles and detachables are touch-enabled by design, which caps their combined revenue share at 52 points. That ceiling shows up again in the touch versus non-touch breakdown and in panel size preferences by format.

A 62.85% clamshell figure also circulates for 2025. It comes from a separate syndicated model built on a different market total, so it is not interchangeable with the 62.96% figure above.

Chromebook Detachable vs Clamshell Sales Statistics Outlook To 2030

IDC forecasts detachable tablet shipments at 81,865,112 units in 2026, rising to 87,434,311 by 2030. Notebooks are forecast at 181,334,313 in 2026 and 207,626,700 by 2030.

Both series are IDC projections across all operating systems, published June 2026. Near term, IDC forecasts the total personal computing device market down 10.4% in 2026 to 401.9 million units, with PC average selling prices up 18.3%.

Neither series carries an operating system split, so the first genuine unit-level disclosure would have to come from a vendor. The premium end of the range, tracked in these Chromebook Plus uptake figures, is where detachables cluster.

Clamshell-style devices lead detachables on every published measure that touches the question. The direction is not in dispute. The magnitude, at Chromebook level and in units, has never been published, and the wider Chromebook user base data carries the same gap.

    FAQs

Do Chromebook detachable vs clamshell sales statistics exist in units?

No. Omdia publishes Chromebook units by vendor only. IDC publishes notebook and detachable tablet units across all operating systems. Neither breaks Chromebooks down by form factor.

How many Chromebooks shipped in Q2 2026?

5.415 million units worldwide, down 8.6% year over year, per Omdia. Lenovo led with 1.758 million units and a 32.5% share. Q1 2026 came in at 4.503 million units.

Where do the form factor percentages posted on Reddit come from?

Syndicated market-research models, not shipment trackers. Maximize Market Research puts Chromebook laptops at 62.96% of 2025 revenue. Revenue share cannot be read as a unit share.

Which Chromebook vendor grew in 2026?

Asus. Shipments rose 66.2% to 749,000 units in Q2 2026, per Omdia. Every other top-five vendor declined, with Dell falling 47.1% to 465,000 units.

Can Reddit answer how many detachable Chromebooks sold in 2026?

No source can. The number is not published. Omdia reports Chromebook shipments as a single category, which totaled 5.415 million units in Q2 2026, down 8.6%.
