Click the gauntlet in the corner or the button above. Half the search results blow away as ash, the counter drops, and the page carries on as if nothing happened.
What Is the Thanos Snap Easter Egg?
Search Google for Thanos and a gold gauntlet appears in the knowledge panel on the right. Click it and half the results disintegrate into dust, the result count falls by half, and the page tilts slightly before settling. Click the hourglass that replaces the gauntlet and everything comes back.
It is one of the few film tie-ins Google built directly into search rather than leaving to fan mirrors, which is why it is remembered as a proper Google easter egg and not a copy.
How the Thanos Snap Started
Google shipped it in April 2019 to tie in with Avengers: Endgame. The animation ran on the live results page, so the dust effect was applied to real search results, and the counter genuinely halved.
It ran for a few weeks and was then retired, along with the Ant-Man zoom trick from the same period. Recreations like the one above are how most people see it now.
How to Use the Thanos Snap
- Click the gauntlet in the top right of the demo, or use the snap button under it.
- Watch the counter: half the listings turn to ash and drift up and to the right.
- Press undo to reverse it, the same way the hourglass worked on the original.
- Use dust everything if you want the page emptied in one go.
The dust here is drawn on a canvas above the page, so each result breaks into a few hundred particles based on how large it is. Bigger blocks make more ash.
FAQs
Does the Thanos snap still work on Google?
Not on google.com. The promotion ended after the film run, so searching for Thanos now returns an ordinary results page. Demos and mirrors kept the effect alive.
Did it delete real search results?
Only visually, and only in your browser. Nothing was removed from the index, and refreshing brought the page back.
Are there other film easter eggs like it?
Yes. Grogu follows your cursor around the page, and the Batman trick puts a signal in the sky.
Why does the page look empty before I snap?
It should not. The demo loads a full search results screen first, tabs and knowledge panel included, so there is something to lose when the gauntlet closes.
