How To Delete All Bookmarks On Chrome

    Dominic ReignsBy Dominic ReignsMay 1, 2026Updated:May 2, 2026No Comments6 Mins Read

A cluttered bookmarks bar slows you down more than you’d think. Old recipe links, expired job postings, and forgotten tutorials pile up until finding anything useful takes longer than a fresh Google search. If you’re ready to wipe the slate clean instead of pruning one by one, Chrome lets you do it in seconds with a keyboard shortcut. The steps differ slightly between desktop, mobile, and synced accounts, so here’s exactly how to handle each.

Back Up Bookmarks Before Deleting Them

Chrome doesn’t ask for confirmation before wiping bookmarks, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. Export them to an HTML file first if you might want them back.

Open Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + O on Windows or Cmd + Option + B on Mac to open the Bookmark Manager. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and pick Export bookmarks. Save the HTML file somewhere you’ll remember, like Google Drive or a USB stick. You can store a copy of your saved Chrome links this way and re-import them anytime through the same menu.

How to Delete All Bookmarks on Chrome (Desktop)

The fastest method works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebook. You’ll need a computer because the keyboard shortcut isn’t available on phones.

    Open the Bookmark Manager

Press Ctrl + Shift + O on Windows, Linux, or Chromebook. On Mac, use Cmd + Option + B. You can also click the three-dot menu, hover over Bookmarks and lists, and pick Bookmark Manager.

Select Every Bookmark in the Folder

Click on the Bookmarks bar folder in the left panel, then press Ctrl + A on Windows or Cmd + A on Mac. Every bookmark in that folder gets highlighted at once. Repeat this for the Other bookmarks and Mobile bookmarks folders if you want to clear them too.

    Delete the Selection

Press the Delete key or right-click and choose Delete. The links disappear instantly. An Undo button shows up in the bottom-left corner for a few seconds, your one chance to reverse course before it’s permanent.

    Delete an Entire Bookmark Folder

If your bookmarks live inside named folders, right-click any folder in the left sidebar of the Bookmark Manager and select Delete. The folder and everything inside it goes in one move. This is faster than selecting individual links when you have hundreds of saved pages.

You can’t remove the three default folders, Bookmarks bar, Other bookmarks, and Mobile bookmarks. Chrome keeps these as system containers, but you can empty them completely.

How to Remove All Chrome Bookmarks on Mobile

Phones don’t support a select-all keyboard shortcut, so the process takes longer. Open Chrome on Android or iOS, tap the three-dot menu, and pick Bookmarks.

Long-press one bookmark to enter selection mode, then tap each additional bookmark you want gone. Tap the trash icon in the top-right corner when you’re done. Folders inside system folders can also be selected this way. The lack of a true bulk delete is why most people just use a desktop browser to handle the cleanup, especially if sync is on.

    Bookmark Cleanup Methods Compared

What Happens to Bookmarks With Sync Turned On

Chrome syncs bookmarks across every device signed into the same Google Account. Delete them on your laptop and they vanish on your phone, tablet, and any other computer where you’ve signed in.

If you only want to clear bookmarks on one device, turn off sync first. Go to Settings, click your account name under You and Google, and switch off Bookmarks. After that, anything you delete stays local. Some users hit the Bookmark Manager and find their old links keep coming back, that’s almost always sync pulling them down from Google’s servers. Disabling it before the cleanup prevents the loop.

Why Bookmarks Sometimes Reappear After Deletion

A few users report that bookmarks come back hours or days after deletion. The usual culprit is sync running in the background. Other times, a corrupted profile or a third-party extension keeps restoring old data.

If your bookmarks won’t stay deleted, sign out of Chrome on every device, clear the bookmarks again on one device, and then sign back in. You can also check what causes Chrome bookmarks to vanish or duplicate if the problem feels stuck. Disabling unfamiliar extensions before the cleanup also helps.

Clear Other Chrome Data While You’re At It

Bookmarks aren’t the only thing that piles up. Cache files, cookies, and old browsing history slow Chrome down over time. Pressing Ctrl + Shift + Delete on Windows or Cmd + Shift + Delete on Mac opens the data deletion dialog, and you can wipe stale cookies and cached files from there. Note that this dialog doesn’t touch bookmarks, even on the All time setting, so the two cleanups stay separate.

If you want to start adding new bookmarks more efficiently after the wipe, the favicon-only trick lets you fit dozens of saved sites into the bookmarks bar by stripping the names. And for users who like keyboard-first workflows, learning the right Chrome OS keyboard combinations turns bookmark management into a 10-second job.

    FAQs

Can I recover deleted Chrome bookmarks?

Click the Undo button in the bottom-left corner right after deletion. After it disappears, recovery requires importing a previously exported HTML backup or using the Bookmarks.bak file in your Chrome profile folder before the next sync overwrites it.

Does deleting bookmarks remove browsing history?

No. Bookmarks and history are separate. Wiping bookmarks only removes saved shortcuts to web pages. Your browsing history stays intact and you can still revisit any site you’ve opened before.

How do I delete bookmarks on Chrome without affecting other devices?

Turn off bookmark sync first. Go to Settings, then You and Google, click your account, and toggle Bookmarks off. Any deletions after that stay local and won’t push to your other Chrome installations.

Why does Ctrl + A not work in my Bookmark Manager?

Click directly inside the bookmark list panel before pressing the shortcut. If your cursor is in the search bar or sidebar, the shortcut won’t register. A browser restart fixes the issue if it persists.

Is there a limit to how many bookmarks Chrome can store?

Google supports up to 100,000 synced bookmarks per account. There’s no hard local limit, but performance suffers well before that number. Most users start noticing slowdowns past a few thousand entries.
