The named remainder, Valve’s July 2026 hardware survey, Stack Overflow’s 2025 developer survey and DistroWatch’s page hit ranking each crown a different winner. Here is what all four actually measure.

W3Techs fingerprints the operating system of the sites it scans, then reports which distribution those Linux sites advertise. Most advertise nothing.
Ubuntu runs two and a half times as many identified Linux sites as Debian. CentOS still outranks AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux individually, five years after Red Hat moved CentOS to a Stream model.

Red Hat’s 0.1% is the clearest sign of what this dataset can and cannot see. It counts public-facing banners, not paid installs sitting behind load balancers. The same blind spot applies to the container images and custom cloud builds that strip version strings before shipping.
Linux overall reaches 61.7% of websites whose operating system W3Techs knows, with the wider Unix family at 91.9%. That server picture sits at the opposite end of the scale from the desktop share numbers ChromeOS posts in browser-based tracking.
Which Linux Distributions Do Steam Gamers Use?
Valve’s survey is opt-in and anonymous, and it describes the machines that answered it, not the installed base. Linux accounted for 4.01% of surveyed Steam systems in July 2026, with Windows at 93.67% and macOS at 2.32%.
Arch-derived systems hold the top three places. Valve reports Ubuntu under three separate version labels rather than one line, so no single Ubuntu entry clears 3%.

Every Steam Deck and Steam Machine reports as a Linux system, so SteamOS Holo’s lead partly tracks hardware sales rather than software preference. Phoronix reported Linux at a survey high of 5.33% in March 2026, and noted that Valve appears to have quietly revised the June figure before publishing July’s.
Fedora 44 KDE gained 0.40 points and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS gained 0.35, the two largest monthly moves among named distributions. Nobara 43 KDE lost 0.53.
Linux Distribution Popularity Among Developers
Stack Overflow asked which operating system respondents primarily work in, and allowed multiple selections. The question drew 31,569 responses, 64.4% of the 2025 sample, so the columns below do not sum to 100% and cannot be added together.
Ubuntu’s two figures differ by a tenth of a point, meaning developers who run it at home mostly run it at work too. Arch does the opposite, dropping from 9.7% personal to 4.6% professional. Red Hat moves the other way.

For scale, the same question put Windows at 56.7% personal and 49.5% professional, and MacOS at 32.7% and 32.9%. Stack Overflow singled out one change in its own commentary: Android passed Ubuntu for personal use, 29% against 28%.
Debian is the distribution Crostini installs by default, which links these developer figures to how developers use the Linux container on ChromeOS hardware. The 2026 edition of the survey is open but unpublished, so 2025 remains the current release.
DistroWatch Page Hit Ranking And Linux Distribution Popularity
DistroWatch counts one hit per IP address per day on each distribution page and averages it over a chosen window. The site says plainly that the ranking correlates with neither usage nor quality and should not be used to measure market share.
Read as an interest gauge instead, it disagrees with everything above. Ubuntu sits ninth at 1,006 hits per day while leading both the web server and developer datasets.

Arch itself ranks fourteenth at 642 hits per day, below four of its own derivatives. New releases push a project’s page views up, so the ranking rewards distributions that ship often and cover them loudly. That is a different signal from the one you get counting deployed machines, much as Chromebook shipment counts tell you about sales rather than active use.
What The Linux Distribution Popularity Statistics Agree On
Two patterns survive across all four methods. Ubuntu leads wherever the measurement touches production or paid work: 15.0% of identified Linux websites and 27.7% of professional developer use.
Arch-derived systems lead wherever it touches gaming. SteamOS Holo, CachyOS and Arch take the top three places on Steam, and CachyOS also tops DistroWatch by a wide margin.
Neither pattern holds in the other’s territory. CachyOS does not appear in W3Techs’ named server list or in the Stack Overflow results at all, and Ubuntu ranks ninth on DistroWatch. Anyone comparing these numbers against Linux usage figures on Chromebook hardware is comparing four separate populations, not four estimates of one.
None of the four can see a desktop installation directly. The closest proxies are a self-selected gaming survey and a self-selected developer survey, both of which describe their own respondents and stop there. Similar sampling limits apply to ChromeOS feature uptake estimates, where the vendor publishes no install counts either.
