Opera GX for Chromebook: What You Can Actually Run in 2026

Dominic ReignsBy Dominic ReignsAugust 20, 2026No Comments4 Mins Read

Opera GX has no ChromeOS release. Opera ships the gaming browser on Windows, macOS and Android, then stops. No desktop Linux package exists either, so the usual install path closes before it opens. What installs in under a minute is the Android version, or the standard Opera app that Opera tuned for these laptops.

Why Opera GX for Chromebook Has No Native Build

Opera keeps its main browser current on nearly every platform. GX skips ChromeOS entirely.

Moderators on Opera’s forums have answered the question the same way since 2021: install regular Opera instead. There is no .deb package, so the Linux container has nothing to install.

Scale explains part of it. Opera recorded 1.89% of global browser use in July 2026, and GX accounts for a fraction of that figure.

    Firefox3.30%

    Opera1.89%

ChromeOS concentrates further. Chrome handles more than 98% of Chromebook web traffic, a share visible in Chromebook browser usage data collected through 2026.

Three Ways to Get Opera GX for Chromebook

Standard OperaA browser shaped for ChromeOSNot the GX edition
Linux plus CrossOverA Windows build of GXSlow and unstable

How to Install the Opera GX Android App on a Chromebook

The phone app takes seconds to fetch. Play Store access has to be switched on first, which the guide on running Android apps under ChromeOS covers in full.

    1. Open the Google Play Store from your launcher.
    2. Search for Opera GX.
    3. Select Install and wait for the download.
    4. Launch it from the app grid.

Its weakness shows immediately. The window stays locked upright, the layout targets touch, and pointer input feels wrong. GX Control, the RAM and CPU limiter panel, does not appear in the mobile build.

Standard Opera Beats Opera GX for Chromebook Daily Use

Opera reworked its mainstream browser for these laptops back in 2021. That version resizes across a wide display, respects keyboard shortcuts, and ships with ad filtering plus a free VPN switched on inside it.

Our hands-on with the ChromeOS-tuned Opera describes how it behaves during a normal working day. If you are still comparing, the roundup of alternative browsers that run on ChromeOS lists what else installs cleanly.

The Linux and CrossOver Route to Opera GX for Chromebook

Experienced owners take a longer path. Switch on the Crostini container, add CrossOver, then feed it the Windows installer for GX.

Nothing starts until the container exists, so begin with enabling Linux on ChromeOS. WINE handles the same job at no cost, and the walkthrough on executing .exe files through WINE shows the commands involved.

It loads sometimes. Frame rates drop, windows misbehave, and updates break the setup. Treat it as a weekend project, not a daily browser. The wider notes on Windows software running under Crostini set realistic expectations.

Which Opera GX for Chromebook Option to Pick

Pick the Android app if the GX name on screen matters more than the window shape. Pick standard Opera if you want a browser that behaves properly on the hardware in front of you.

Leave CrossOver for days when tinkering is the point. Sideloading a newer APK through ADB rather than the Play Store changes nothing about the portrait lock.

    FAQs

Can you download Opera GX on a Chromebook?

Only the Android version. Search Opera GX in the Google Play Store and install it. Opera publishes no ChromeOS or Linux desktop build, so the full gaming browser stays unavailable.

Why does Opera GX open sideways on my Chromebook?

The Android build supports portrait orientation only. It was written for phone screens, so it stays locked upright on a laptop display and ignores window resizing.

Does Opera GX for Chromebook include GX Control?

No. The RAM, CPU and network limiters belong to the desktop edition. The Android app on ChromeOS omits that panel entirely.

Is CrossOver reliable for running Opera GX on ChromeOS?

Rarely. CrossOver runs the Windows build inside the Linux container, but performance is poor and crashes are common. Standard Opera remains the stable choice.

Is Opera better than Opera GX on a Chromebook?

Yes, for everyday browsing. Standard Opera scales across the display, supports keyboard shortcuts, and includes a free VPN plus ad blocking that the mobile GX app lacks.
